Ace nodded gruffly before saying, "Yes, but I don't think that that will be fully necessary. It should not get that high." The water was already halfway up their legs, but it was slowing its ascent. Walking would be difficult, but swimming would be much harder and not much faster. "I still can't see any land." His eyes worked best in this dark. Then, a splash came to his ears. He tilted his head to the left to watch the water. He could make out a ripple in the water. "It seems we aren't alone..." He focused forward and yelled, "Run!"
The shark jumped out of the water at the bridge with jaws gnashing together.

Marrok turned to see the shark and his heart suddenly stopped. He quickly took Ace's advice to run. He started running as fast as he could. With the water up to his legs, Marrok had a harder time to run. He cursed silently under his breath. As much as he loved the water, this was the worst time possible for him to be in the water. He looked to his side and saw that Ace's eyes were focused directly in front of him. He quickly forward as well, knowing that looking to his side would not help him escape from such a beast.

Ace knew the shark would be at its weakest on the land bridge upon which they were walking, but he was still having a hard time calculating how to fight it in such a hot pursuit. He knew they would find land soon, but how soon was soon exactly? They were near death here. The water was slowing him down only through exhaustion. Then, in the midst of their anguish, he heard the water splash behind him, narrowly missing the other wolf. "Keep going!" Ace called to the wolf as he turned around to the opposite direction. As one target, the two of them might not survive. As two targets, perhaps a little confusion would wear the shark down.

Marrok looked at Ace. "Okay!" Marrok called back to Ace. He guessed the plan in Ace's mind was to confuse the shark. So, he tried to keep as far away as he could from the other wolf. That would surely confuse the shark. His breath was slowly running out, but he dared not to stop in fear that if he did, then, he would be shark bait. So, he did not chance that idea. In the corner of his eye, he could see the confusion in the shark's eye. 'We got him,' he said aloud in his head.

Ace stopped running so hard and turned around, chasing after Marrok at the same pace, not wanting to get too far separated from the other wolf. The shark was clearly between them, and Ace could see the shark head toward first Marrok and then Ace and then back again. It was truly confused. Suddenly, it charged toward Ace at full speed. Not expecting the attack, Ace did not have time to retaliate, but he did jump over the shark, watching its teeth gnash in frustration at the sand under Ace. Once he landed past the shark, he realized that the two wolves had the upper hand: They had beaten the shark, and it was not going to catch up to them now. Still, Ace ran just as fast, tongue hanging from his dark mouth.

Marrok ran fast along Ace's side. He laughed inside his head. They had gotten the shark and he was more than confused. He could not help but smile as they ran beside each other. Marrok looked back to see the shark turn towards them. However, it was still too confused and very slow to ever catch up to them. As long as they continued running, the shark would not be getting a meal of two wolves.

Ace did not speak as they continued to run near the land that finally appeared in the distance. The moon hung overhead, though a blanket of clouds dimmed its pale, silvery light from gracing the wolves fully. The waves splashed soundlessly around their feet, but it had lowered since their battle with the shark. The land was rising, and soon, they would step paw on solid earth again. Ace did not mind too much. He loved the night, especially when the sea was blessed with such an atmosphere as they were witnessing now. He did not smile, but he did not groan either. He was on the same road he had been traveling for years. Yet, somehow, he felt a little closer.

As the two were reaching the land, Marrok felt a pang of regret deep in his stomach. More than anything, he loved the water with all his heart. He did not appreciate getting back to solid ground. The only good part about it was that they were away from the shark. Marrok loved when the moon's reflections glistened on the water, but it was not this night since the clouds were covering it. He continued running, since the land had not fully risen at the moment, but turned to see Ace's expression. He only saw a blank face.
